Los An Jewels – Rainbows

Los An Jewels
Los An Jewels’ latest single “Rainbows” embraces summer with a hyper pop rap style which also includes some rock and reggae elements.
Usually, when I post a video on the site social accounts, it’s because I don’t plan to write an article about it. This time I’ll make an exception, since Los An Jewels‘ latest single has so much going on that I want to spend some words on it.

While their usual trap/hip-hop sound is still present especially in the beats, there are very summer-ish vibes coming from a couple of different styles: on one hand we have those electric guitars supporting the hook which remind me of late Nineties western pop/rock; but even more, there are some ska-reggae influences in verse adding a beach-like touch. It’s almost a different group from the one we know, if not for the almost too powerful kick drum, the autotuned vocals and the fairly simple melodies, which are all the reasons that make me enjoy Los An Jewels.

As you can see from the MV, the group is now a duo after Nullmayu House left; hopefully, the two remaining members Lie La Lie and Satis Faction will keep it going and maybe will find a new companion.

I admit that when I first heard about them I has some doubts since I’m not really a fan of trap music, but Los An Jewels are managing to make the style interesting adding various elements to it. And that’s why I need to remember that they are not merely a trap unit, but a hyper pop rap one, which is clearly what this song is made of.

sora tob sakana – 信号 (Shingō)

sora tob sakana
Before disbanding in September, sora tob sakana will release one last album; “信号” (Shingō) is an appetizer for “deep blue”, which will come out next month.
Idol groups come and go, we already know that; still, it’s sad to see a group like sora tob sakana announce their disbandment after six years of activity in which they released two albums (with the third, deep blue, coming out in August) and two EPs and made some openings/endings for a couple of anime’s. Quite a lot of stuff for a non-conventional idol unit.

sora tob sakana became well-known in the scene thanks to their refined, often quiet yet complex sound involving progressive and math-rock elements, despite sounding very pop-ish. Before saying goodbye, the group broughts us a new MV for “信号” (Shingō), which will be featured in their upcoming album and sounds like a good way to remind us why we are going to miss them.

The song leans more on the quiet side of their music, featuring slow but intricate beats, atmospheric synths and vocal lines as catchy as unpredictable, in the usual osakana way. The bassline crawling in the background in the second half makes the song soothing, while the atmosphere feels a bit dark and hazy, making it a good relaxing listening, especially at night; the sampled vocals are also a nice addition.

deep blue, their last album, will be released next month, a few weeks before their disbandment in September. sora tob sakana will go out soon, but will do it with a bang: this is what “Shingō” just told us.

FRUN FRIN FRIENDS – キセラセラ (Que Sera Sera) / yum yum remix [live]

FRUN FRIN FRIENDS

FRUN FRIN FRIENDS, idol duo formed by Nayuta Aku and Usakura Beni, released a live video recorded in May; a new online show will be held in a few days.

Being made by two superstars of the underground idol scene, it shouldn’t surprise how strong the hype around FRUN FRIN FRIENDS is. The duo formed by ex-Avandoned members Nayuta Aku (formerly in Kaqriyo Terror Architect as Nonamera and also in other non-idol projects) and Usakura Beni (also in APOKALIPPPS) held a live show on the 17th of May and a few days ago a video of that performance was released on their channel.

The live video shows the two songs included in their first release, namely “キセラセラ” (Que Sera Sera) and “yum yum”: the first one is a pure and soothing song, featuring cheerful, carefree sounds and melodies; the latter, on the other hand, has a more hip-hop-ish vibe and some 8-bit synths, making it slightly more bizarre, although still very catchy and pop-oriented. The colorful outfits and the eye-catching attitude on stage complete the show and make it look like a very fun experience, where the two girls as well are having a lot of fun.

NO LIVE, NO LIFE — the live show recorded in this video — will come back on the 15th of July and, together with FRUN FRIN FRIENDS, there will be other idol groups such as Jyu Jyu and Cinder Ella; if you want to watch the streaming, click here.
