星歴13夜 (Seireki13ya) – Hugdreamy Horoscope

Seireki13ya
“Hugdreamy Horoscope” by 星歴13夜 / Seireki13ya sounds like the music of the fairies; once again, Codomomental managed to create some otherworldly idols.
Warning: if you’re on a diet, don’t listen to this release; the amount of sugar it contains is way too much to be ignored. No, just kidding, go listen to it right now. Hugdreamy Horoscope, the debut album of 星歴13夜 (Seireki13ya), is probably the music the fairies in your dreams listen to. What? You’ve never dreamt of fairies? That’s fine: just give this work a try and you’ll get the idea.

Take ZenKimi’s fantasy-dreamlike side, make the EDM influence slightly more evident and varied, make twelve tracks out of it and you should be able to understand what this album is about. Seireki13ya proves to be Codomomental’s less aggressive unit as of today, yet their songs have a lot of energy and never fail to amaze. Starting off with the traditional Japanese sounds and melodies of “おやすみ未来と恋乙女” (Oyasumimirai To Koiotome) all the way to the otherworldy atmosphere surrounding “NyxNocturne”, Hugdreamy Horoscope will put you in a dreamlike state, making you wonder wheter you’re still in the real world or if you transcended to another dimension.

Moving between pop and EDM through fast 4/4 beats and slower rhythms, using various elements such as dubstep-like wobble bass and happy hardcore lead synths and including even some breakcore in the short “Horoscoplot” interlude, the album often manages to surprise, despite having a really coherent and not so experimental sound; what makes it interesting is actually the imagery it almost forces you to create in your mind while listening to it, which is usually some weird-yet-awesome stuff. Take “Vanilla Drops” for example: to me, it feels like swimming in ice cream, among sweet cherries and chocolate flakes. No, it doesn’t really make sense, but that’s the feeling I get from the creamy softness of this song.

It’s not always that bizarre anyway; sometimes, Seireki13ya like to go for more simple stuff: “よるのくに” (Yoru-No-Kuni) sounds like a good soundtrack for a stargazing session, while “NarcoLepsy” tries to lull you until your soul drifts to the dream realm. On the other hand, “愛し泡沫ト” (Itoshiutakatato) is like being in the mind of children who ate too much candy, with full rainbows of colors flashing before your eyes and through your ears. Yeah, we’re already back to some weird stuff.

Regardless of the odd imagery, Hugdreamy Horoscope never gets boring and it is actually a lot of fun; and when you say fun, you can’t help but think at the upbeat and highly dynamic “せかいせんごと” (Sekaisengoto) which would make even the dead shake their heads to its captivating rhythm. At the same time, the spacey effects in “ヨクトアステリズム” (Yocto Asterism) takes the bizarreness to an almost sci-fi level, while following the usual surreal style.

Much more stuff awaits you in the dreamlike world of Seireki13ya; I haven’t even talked about “The Gift Of Nothing” and “268019”, which are actually two great tracks… but I’ll leave you the pleasure of discovering their awesomeness. Codomomental keeps being one of the strongest players in the idol scene and with Hugdreamy Horoscope they managed to make the most of a sound that they already used here and there. Good job, everyone!
