TOP 10 IDOL MV – March 2021

TOP 10 IDOL MV - March 2021

Another month has passed, and so here we are for another Top 10 of the best alternative idol MV’s released in March. Let’s take a look at these ten awesome videos!

10) EIMIE – FAKE

EIMIE‘s latest MV is pretty good. “FAKE” consists of an alternative metal sound with vocals mostly influenced by rap, except for those awesome growled parts, which unfortunately don’t last that much. In any case, the song is still very enjoyable.

9) 8bitBRAIN – Black Sabbath

No Osbournes were harmed in the making of this video, I promise. 8bitBRAIN are back with their electronic-infused metal sound, with the usual autotuned vocals. If you love this style, you’ll surely enjoy “Black Sabbath”. Although I wanna hear them saying I am iron man in autotune now.

8) プシュケとラーガ (Psyche and Raga) – Winning Ark (Daybreak)

How many times have I been featuring プシュケとラーガ (Psyche and Raga) lately? Not that’s a problem. The psychedelic unit brings us their first MV for “Winning Ark (Daybreak)”, which is a kinda catchy and simple one, compared to other songs they have released before.

7) POPPiNG EMO – SELFISH

POPPiNG EMO have been doing great lately, just listen to the intense electronic/pop-infused rock sound of “SELFISH” to understand what I mean. For some reason, the main guitar has been stuck in my head for a while, despite not being really that much unique or awesome. Not that I complain, anyway.

6) ピューパ!! (Pupa!!) – Vanilla

Everytime I listen to ピューパ!! (Pupa!!), I get fascinated by their dreamy, delicate sound; “Vanilla” is no exception, of course. You start getting lulled by guitars resembling post-rock’s calmer parts, accompanied by a synthetic background, and then some intense synth pop hits you. That’s a very nice feeling.

5) FRUN FRIN FRIENDS – バニラ (Vanilla)

More “Vanilla”, this time from FRUN FRIN FRIENDS. Both the song and the video feel very artistic, if that makes any sense. Catchy, cute and poppy, but still refined and kinda unique. Check out the MV for “Strawberry” too, released together with this one.

4) 9DayzGlitchClubTokyo – Brand new Stimulate

Heavy and weird electronic stuff, catchy and intense pop/metal mix, a bit of hip-hop: anything else? Apparently, 9DayzGlitchClubTokyo have anything you need in their music. “Brand new Stimulate” is their first MV, and it shows how promising this unit is.

3) INUWASI – holy

If you read the review of their EP, you should already know I love INUWASI; in case you haven’t, go read it. Do it NOW. Anyway, while “holy” is not my favorite song from the mini-album, it’s still a good one where post-hardcore and electronic/hip-hop meet, which is a great mix.

2) めろん畑a go go (Melon Batake A Go Go) – 撃つな琉陀瓶! (Utsu Na RUTAKAME!)

Our favorite masked super-heroines are back with their usual retro-styled music. “撃つな琉陀瓶!” (Utsu Na RUTAKAME!) is an awesome song featuring memorable vocal lines and lots of stuff from long lost decades, exactly what we would expect from めろん畑a go go (Melon Batake A Go Go).

1) 感覚ロヂック (Kankaku Logic) – 深愛嫌悪 (Shin’ai Ken’o)

感覚ロヂック (Kankaku Logic) really outdid themselves with “深愛嫌悪” (Shin’ai Ken’o). The song keeps switching between extreme metal and dark, haunting parts, with a video which fits perfectly the music. Definitely not for the faint-hearted. Unless you want to get traumatized.

IDOL LIVE COLLECTION #1

IDOL LIVE COLLECTION #1

I miss live shows may be the mantra of every music fan during this pandemic; but on the other hand, technology gives us a hand by letting us see concerts online. Yeah, it’s not really the same, but let’s be content with what we have.

Similarly to what I’m doing with the monthly Top 10 MV’s, here we have some recent live videos from various idol groups. Many units included here are very underground and all videos feature just one song, so hopefully you’ll be able to discover some new idols in a short time. Enjoy!

閏 -うるう- (Urū) – AESTHETICS

The first time we met Urū was thanks to Chika Radar #8; since then, there have been some changes to the unit, but what hasn’t changed is that if you enjoy the emotional rock style, you’ll surely like this group as well. Here you can get a taste of their energy with “AESTHETICS”.

Re:INCARNATION – JUST A HERO!!

Another group we met through our Chika Radar (episode #18), Re:INCARNATION bring a healthy dose of pure fun with their catchy and happiness-filled pop/rock sound. “JUST A HERO!!” is a very nice and light song indeed.

emmersive – Reload

emmersive is a very young group, and while they’re not really groundbreaking, their music is really enjoyable. “Reload” delivers a very idol-ish and light pop/rock sound which can surely be enjoyed by many people.

Dan te Lion – 天 (Ten)

Pop/rock seems really popular in this video collection, so let’s add some more thanks to Dan te Lion. Although I don’t see too many people talking about them in the international idol fans community, “Ten” proves that they are not really bad, mixing quite heavy guitars with a very pop sound featuring a rapped part as well.

lyrical school – last summer

Speaking of rap, lyrical school popped up in this collection: veterans of the alternative idol scene, they have been bringing us their hip-hop sound for a decade. The slow-paced “last summer” is taken from their 2020 EP OK!!!!! and this live video proves that they are still an awesome unit.

POPPiNG EMO – SELFISH

A very recent video from POPPiNG EMO for a song that also got a MV. “SELFISH” brings their rock sound with a nice guitar riff and an even better hook, reminding me that I need to listen to them more often.

AKIARIM – One

AKIARIM recently added two new members and here you can watch them in action; from what it seems, they are doing great with this line-up. “One” is also a very enjoyable song from them, filled with rock energy and featuring a great hook.

プシュケとラーガ (Psyche and Raga) – Winning Ark

Chika Radar #24 guests Psyche and Raga are a quite uncommmon group, with their psychedelic rock sound; but here they also give us a members perspective live video, which lets us look at them from the stage. The sound quality is not the best, but you can feel that “Winning Ark” is not half bad.

AIBECK – Stay Gold

Don’t be fooled by the quiet acoustic intro of “Stay Gold”: AIBECK can also be pretty intense, and you can feel it in this song as well. This also makes me think that their live shows, just like their music, are full of various emotions. I recommend you to take a look at the video interview to know more about them.

XOXO EXTREME feat. Silent Of Nose Mischief – 羊たちの進撃 〜The assault of the Lambs〜

Finally, let’s close this collection with one of the most unique groups out there. With the collaboration of genre-bending progressive band Silent Of Nose Mischief, XOXO EXTREME deliver a theatrical and poetic performance of “The assault of the Lambs”, where great instrumentals, emotional idol vocals and dramatic choreography blend together. Seriously astonishing.

TOP 10 IDOL MV – November 2020

Top 10 Idol MV - November 2020

Here we go again with another Top 10 of the latest MV’s. Check out this list of the best alternative idol music videos of November!

10) ピューパ!! (Pupa!!) – FUTURE IS MINE

Why do I never read people talking about ピューパ!! (Pupa!!)? They are a very refined idol unit and “FUTURE IS MINE” is a great tune. The fuzzy electric guitars in the background combined with their bright synth pop sound give an ethereal and almost post-rockish aura to to this song. I highly recommend you to follow them.

9) POPPiNG EMO – NIGHTMARE

I wouldn’t say that POPPiNG EMO are among my favorite groups, but every now and then they release something that makes me doubt this statement. The rock sound of “NIGHTMARE” feels full of emotions and the song is perfectly capable of conveying them all, thanks especially to the vocals and the very dynamic rhythm. Good job.

8) Devil ANTHEM. – UP

Did we just enter a Second Life session or what? Devil ANTHEM. activated their WTF mode with the MV for “UP”, a strongly EDM-oriented song accompanied by the weirdest music video of this month. I’m not sure about calling it beautiful or great, but what I’m sure is that I won’t be able to keep it out of my mind for a while.

7) ぜんぶ君のせいだ。 (Zenbukiminoseida.) – インソムニア (Insomnia)

I’ll be honest, I’m still dealing with the recent line-up changes ぜんぶ君のせいだ。 (Zenbukiminoseida.) went through, but at least “Insomnia” is a nice song. While it’s not their best one, it’s good enough to make me (partially) overcome my disappointment. Losing members important like Mashiro and Yotsu must have been hard, which is why I consider this a first positive step in rebuilding the part of the group which is not there anymore.

6) 回せ!グルーヴ開発部 (Mawase! Groove Kaihatsubu) – 安全開発ソング (Anzen kaihatsu song)

Unfortunately, this is probably the swansong of 回せ!グルーヴ開発部 (Mawase! Groove Kaihatsubu), and it’s a pity since they were very interesting. “安全開発ソング” (Anzen kaihatsu song) blends pop catchiness with happy hardcore beats and some breakcore-like parts. I’m sure I wanted a lot more music from this group, but we know how the cruel idol world likes to toy with our feelings.

5) YORUWAKOREKARA – オキテ破り (Okite-yaburi)

Don’t be fooled by the outdated visuals of this MV: YORUWAKOREKARA is a new idol group and this is their first music video. “オキテ破り” (Okite-yaburi) brings us some kind of catchy city pop mixed up with fast and intense electronic beats. The result is moderately bizarre, and that’s why this unit looks very interesting.

4) FRUN FRIN FRIENDS – 檸檬色の爆弾 (Lemon-iro no bakudan)

You can’t help but loving FRUN FRIN FRIENDS‘s unique brand of pop music. “檸檬色の爆弾” (Lemon-iro no bakudan) seems to draw influences from late 80s or early 90s music, which together with the cute vocals of the duo results in a charming and dreamlike song accompanied by a colorful video inspired by those past decades.

3) INforMEL – Drown

Despite being a young unit, INforMEL already sounds very interesting. Intense and emotional, their music will give you the kind of feelings you would expect from a post-hardcore group and “Drown” is a perfect example of how good they are at conveying them. The catchiness of the chorus combined with the powerful guitars and rhythms is definitely amazing.

2) 我儘ラキア (Wagamama Rakia) – SURVIVE

Although I already knew that 我儘ラキア (Wagamama Rakia) never disappoints, “SURVIVE” managed to surprise me with its quality: it’s the best proof of how MIRI has been a great addition to the group, often bringing the group’s sound towards some sort of nu metal, which works perfectly with their already intense, powerful and highly emotional music. A very cool song and an equally interesting MV.

1) ZOMBIE POWDER – 傷だらけのミラー (Kizu-darake no Mirror)

This month, Zombie Powder definitely deserve the first place. Blending heavy metal riffs with hip-hop beats and vocals and also an interesting k-pop-like flavor, “傷だらけのミラー” (Kizu-darake no Mirror) will bring you in a ghost town with its MV. And you’ll find yourself visiting that same abandoned city many and many times over, with the four zombie girls providing an awesome soundtrack to your journey.

Once again, there were so many good MV’s this month. So, if you need more of them, here they are!
