TOP 10 IDOL MV – July 2021

TOP 10 IDOL MV - July 2021

July has been so hectic that I almost forgot I had to select the best MV’s of the month for this Top 10. This actually gave me a good chance to re-listen to some song I mistakenly discarded as just nice (don’t blame me please, I said I’ve been busy), so all’s well that ends well. Anyway, let’s see the ten videos I chose for last month.

10) くぴぽ (qppo) – 天国 (Tengoku)

For a song titled “Tengoku”, the music is indeed quite heavenly here. For this one, qppo went for an atmospheric future bass sound with ethereal vocals on top of it and the result is quite fascinating. Good job with the glitchy and colorful MV too.

9) バグMEME (BUG MEME) – It’s My Steelo

“It’s My Steelo” is a song we already knew from the time BUG MEME were still called SAVATLIME; it was actually my favorite one from that group, so I’m not complaining about it getting a (live) MV. I especially like the pre-chorus, which reminds me a lot of Western EDM/pop music.

8) Re:INCARNATION – Twinkle GIRL

Among the many oh-so-weird moments in the alternative idol scene, every now and then you may need a simple rock song for a change: that’s what Re:INCARNATION are here for, bringing their “Twinkle GIRL” song with them. No surprises, no unneeded bizarreness, just a plain rock song, and a nice one too.

7) ピュ―パ!! (Pupa!!) – Nichijo

Whether they do cheesy synth pop or more rock-ish stuff, Pupa!! always pull it off. This time, with “Nichijo”, the three girls went for a very enjoyable dream pop sound, featuring all the ethereal emotions usually conveyed by this genre. Maybe it’s not the most outstanding song from them, but at the same time the quality of their music is never too low.

6) さっきの女の子、(Sakki No Onnanoko) – が覚えてる青春 (Ga Oboe Teru Seishun)

Sakki No Onnanoko have been releasing this kind of anime-like MV’s for a while, with “Ga Oboe Teru Seishun” being the latest song getting one. If happy-sounding jazz-infused electro-pop is a style you would enjoy, you should definitely try them and starting from this one may be a good idea.

5) GO TO THE BEDS – Meaningless

Blending an electro-pop sound with intense rock guitars, GO TO THE BEDS‘ “Meaningless” is not half bad. The mix of genres is almost bizarre if you consider how different the verse sounds compared to the chorus, but it actually flows nicely. There are also some strange people dancing with them in the MV, making the music not so weird after all.

4) 始発待ちアンダーグラウンド (Shihatsu-Machi Underground) – ノスタルジア (Nostalgia)

Shihatsu-Machi Underground temporarily put their usual psychedelic music aside in favor of a more jazzy pop-oriented sound. I have to say that I didn’t expect this from them, but “Nostalgia” sounds pretty good nonetheless. The piano and bass combo with some brass and guitars here and there make a very refined yet slightly upbeat and easily enjoyable song.

3) #2i2 – FATE

For some reasong, I expected #2i2 to be a bit softer than this. I’ m not saying I don’t like them though, on the contrary I’m enjoying this pop-ish post-hardcore sound more than I thought. “FATE” has all it needs to be a perfect alt-idol song: emotional vocals (with harsh ones in the background), intense music, catchy synths and a random electro-pop part which doesn’t really belong here.

2) unknown – envy

unknown bring us a very atmospheric, ethereal and shoegaze-ish brand of rock with “Envy” with delicate synths and guitar notes supported by a relatively powerful rhythm section (that bass is almost too loud! …not that I’m complaining). The vocals are also on the graceful side, making the sound even more heavenly and emotional. The setting of the MV is also very cool and the choreography is interesting too.

1) 神使轟く、激情の如く。 (Shingeki) – 神奏曲:インフェルノ (Shinsō Kyoku: Inferno)

Differently from other groups, I always know what to expect from Shingeki, to some extent; except they always find some way to impress me. “Shinsō Kyoku: Inferno” is an incredibly intense song ranging from alternative metal to powerful metalcore with their usual quirks like 8-bit synths, emotional piano notes, lots of harsh vocals, rapped parts and — of course — a carchy chorus. They never fail to remind me why I love them so much.

Honorable Mentions

IDOL LIVE COLLECTION #1

IDOL LIVE COLLECTION #1

I miss live shows may be the mantra of every music fan during this pandemic; but on the other hand, technology gives us a hand by letting us see concerts online. Yeah, it’s not really the same, but let’s be content with what we have.

Similarly to what I’m doing with the monthly Top 10 MV’s, here we have some recent live videos from various idol groups. Many units included here are very underground and all videos feature just one song, so hopefully you’ll be able to discover some new idols in a short time. Enjoy!

閏 -うるう- (Urū) – AESTHETICS

The first time we met Urū was thanks to Chika Radar #8; since then, there have been some changes to the unit, but what hasn’t changed is that if you enjoy the emotional rock style, you’ll surely like this group as well. Here you can get a taste of their energy with “AESTHETICS”.

Re:INCARNATION – JUST A HERO!!

Another group we met through our Chika Radar (episode #18), Re:INCARNATION bring a healthy dose of pure fun with their catchy and happiness-filled pop/rock sound. “JUST A HERO!!” is a very nice and light song indeed.

emmersive – Reload

emmersive is a very young group, and while they’re not really groundbreaking, their music is really enjoyable. “Reload” delivers a very idol-ish and light pop/rock sound which can surely be enjoyed by many people.

Dan te Lion – 天 (Ten)

Pop/rock seems really popular in this video collection, so let’s add some more thanks to Dan te Lion. Although I don’t see too many people talking about them in the international idol fans community, “Ten” proves that they are not really bad, mixing quite heavy guitars with a very pop sound featuring a rapped part as well.

lyrical school – last summer

Speaking of rap, lyrical school popped up in this collection: veterans of the alternative idol scene, they have been bringing us their hip-hop sound for a decade. The slow-paced “last summer” is taken from their 2020 EP OK!!!!! and this live video proves that they are still an awesome unit.

POPPiNG EMO – SELFISH

A very recent video from POPPiNG EMO for a song that also got a MV. “SELFISH” brings their rock sound with a nice guitar riff and an even better hook, reminding me that I need to listen to them more often.

AKIARIM – One

AKIARIM recently added two new members and here you can watch them in action; from what it seems, they are doing great with this line-up. “One” is also a very enjoyable song from them, filled with rock energy and featuring a great hook.

プシュケとラーガ (Psyche and Raga) – Winning Ark

Chika Radar #24 guests Psyche and Raga are a quite uncommmon group, with their psychedelic rock sound; but here they also give us a members perspective live video, which lets us look at them from the stage. The sound quality is not the best, but you can feel that “Winning Ark” is not half bad.

AIBECK – Stay Gold

Don’t be fooled by the quiet acoustic intro of “Stay Gold”: AIBECK can also be pretty intense, and you can feel it in this song as well. This also makes me think that their live shows, just like their music, are full of various emotions. I recommend you to take a look at the video interview to know more about them.

XOXO EXTREME feat. Silent Of Nose Mischief – 羊たちの進撃 〜The assault of the Lambs〜

Finally, let’s close this collection with one of the most unique groups out there. With the collaboration of genre-bending progressive band Silent Of Nose Mischief, XOXO EXTREME deliver a theatrical and poetic performance of “The assault of the Lambs”, where great instrumentals, emotional idol vocals and dramatic choreography blend together. Seriously astonishing.

CHIKA RADAR #18: Re:INCARNATION

CHIKA RADAR #18: Re:INCARNATION

In the middle of this pandemic, a new group of rock idols was born: let’s talk about Re:INCARNATION, the sister group of CANDY GO! GO!

“Those who have walked different paths gathered under a new project”: such cool words to introduce this fresh new group Re:INCARNATION. Let’s get to know them, since they look quite interesting.

The unit officially formed at the end of April and will be the sister group of CANDY GO! GO!, which share the same agency and producer with them, namely ONEtoONE and OKB. Due the lockdown in Japan, Re:INCARNATION had to introduce themselves through their YouTube channel; this introduction video also presents their first song “信じてる-keep on going-” (Shinjiteru -keep on going-), which really fits the concept of rock idols full of positive feelings.

Let’s also get to know the members of this unit, as the name Re:INCARNATION and those cool words actually have a meaning: these six girls had their own experiences in other fields of the entertainment world, and now have been united in this group.

田中舞 (Tanaka Mai) has been working as an actress and model for five years, but also wanted to be an idol and finally achieved her dream with Re:INCARNATION; 川井マリア (Kawai Maria) has a similar story, having been working as a model and trying to be an idol too thanks to some fun memories; のあ。 (Noa.) is not just an idol, as she is also the drummer in Elue Marine, the backing band of CANDY GO! GO!; ましろりま (Mashiro Rima)’s story almost sounds like an idol anime character’s background, coming from the countryside and deciding to become an artist after attending a show; kill. chose this name from the desire to kill the hearts of those around her, and while it sounds dangerous, it’s not 100% true… only 20%; last but not least, 嬉野あかり (Ureshino Akari) is the inexperienced-but-full-of-hopes-and-dreams one here, and also had to fight against her parents to join the group.

Due to the lockdown still going on in Japan, we will probably need to wait a bit for Re:INCARNATION‘s real debut, but having started right in the middle of this pandemic I’m pretty sure they won’t get discouraged by this virus. Let’s wait for them and hope they’ll be as successful as their sisters.
